100% malaria-free reserves — safe for all ages
This 5-day family safari is specifically designed for parents travelling with children who want an authentic Big Five wildlife experience without the health risks associated with malaria zones. South Africa's North West Province is home to two exceptional malaria-free game reserves — Madikwe and Pilanesberg — both of which deliver outstanding game viewing in safe, family-friendly environments. Madikwe Game Reserve, one of South Africa's largest reserves at 75,000 hectares, was created through one of the most ambitious wildlife relocation programmes in history, the 'Operation Phoenix.' Today it supports healthy populations of all Big Five species plus wild dog, cheetah, and over 350 bird species. Your family-friendly lodge features inter-leading rooms, child-minding services, junior ranger programmes, and special children's menus — ensuring that parents relax while young adventurers are entertained and educated. At Pilanesberg, the reserve's unique location in an ancient volcanic crater creates a dramatic landscape where wildlife roams against a backdrop of hills and alkaline lakes. Specially designed family game drives with shorter routes, frequent stops, and engaging commentary keep even the youngest members of the family enthralled. Evening activities include stargazing sessions, bug hunts with torches, and storytelling around the campfire. This is an African safari that the whole family will treasure — safe, exciting, and designed to create lifelong memories for children and parents alike.

Your Journey, Day by Day
5 carefully curated days across Madikwe Game Reserve, Pilanesberg National Park
Day 1
Johannesburg to Madikwe Game Reserve
Depart Johannesburg in the morning for the approximately 3.5-hour drive to Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West Province. The drive passes through rolling highveld grasslands before descending into the bushveld. Arrive at your family lodge by lunchtime. The children are immediately enrolled in the Junior Ranger programme, receiving their own activity booklets and binoculars. After settling in, embark on the first family game drive — shorter than adult drives, with plenty of stops for questions, photos, and bush snacks. The guide keeps children engaged with games, tracking challenges, and wildlife facts.
Day 2
Full Day Madikwe — Big Five & Bush Skills
A full day exploring Madikwe's diverse habitats. The morning game drive heads to productive areas where Big Five sightings are most likely — the reserve's elephants are particularly relaxed around vehicles, and children are thrilled by close encounters with these gentle giants. White rhino are commonly seen grazing in the open, and your guide knows the best spots for lion and wild dog. After brunch, the Junior Ranger programme continues with bush-skills activities: tracking identification, bird call recognition, and making plaster casts of animal footprints. The afternoon drive focuses on the reserve's rare species — wild dog packs and cheetah are Madikwe specialities.
Day 3
Madikwe to Pilanesberg National Park
After a morning game drive and brunch at Madikwe, transfer south to Pilanesberg National Park — a stunning reserve set in the crater of an ancient volcano. The unique geological setting creates a beautiful landscape of hills, valleys, and alkaline lakes. Check into your lodge and enjoy a family lunch. The afternoon game drive explores the crater floor, where hippo pods inhabit the lakes and large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and impala graze in the grasslands. The evening features a stargazing session using the lodge's telescope — the clear bushveld skies reveal thousands of stars invisible in the city.
Day 4
Full Day Pilanesberg — Crater Exploration
A full day in Pilanesberg's volcanic crater. The morning game drive circles Mankwe Dam, the largest body of water in the park, where elephants bathe, hippos surface, and fish eagles call from the dead trees. Continue through diverse habitats from grassland to rocky hillside, where klipspringer and mountain reedbuck are found. A bush walk for older children (8+) explores the smaller world of the bush — insects, frogs, tracks, and plants — while younger children enjoy supervised activities at the lodge. The afternoon drive includes a visit to the cultural heritage site within the park, where ancient stone tools and archaeological remains reveal human habitation stretching back 100,000 years. A special farewell braai (barbecue) dinner celebrates the family adventure.
Day 5
Pilanesberg to Johannesburg — Departure
Enjoy a final short morning game drive before breakfast. Children receive their Junior Ranger certificates and badges at a special ceremony. Check out and transfer back to Johannesburg — the approximately 2.5-hour drive from Pilanesberg arrives in time for afternoon flights. Families can also add a visit to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site en route, exploring the Maropeng Visitor Centre and the Sterkfontein Caves where some of humanity's oldest ancestors were discovered.
