South Luangwa — highest leopard density in Africa
South Luangwa National Park is one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa — and this 6-day luxury safari immerses you in its extraordinary natural abundance. The park occupies the end of the Great Rift Valley, where the meandering Luangwa River sustains a vibrant ecosystem of woodland, lagoon, and open floodplain. South Luangwa is known for three things above all others: the highest concentration of leopards in Africa, the birthplace of the walking safari, and wildlife density that rivals the Serengeti. Your journey through this remarkable park links three carefully selected camps, each offering a different perspective on the Luangwa ecosystem. The first camp sits on the main river, where hippo pods number in the hundreds and elephants cross the sandy riverbed at dawn. The second camp, deeper in the park, accesses remote areas where wild dog packs and lion prides roam. The third camp specialises in walking safaris — the activity that South Luangwa pioneered and that remains the park's signature experience. Walking in the African bush with an armed guide and expert tracker is a profound sensory experience: the crack of a twig underfoot becomes significant, the scent of elephant hangs in the air, and every rustle in the undergrowth demands attention. This is safari as it was meant to be experienced — intimate, immersive, and deeply connecting you to the wild. Luxury accommodation, gourmet cuisine, and warm Zambian hospitality complete an unforgettable South Luangwa experience.

Your Journey, Day by Day
6 carefully curated days across South Luangwa National Park
Day 1
Lusaka to South Luangwa — Arrival
Board your morning flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe Airport, the gateway to South Luangwa National Park. The flight takes approximately 90 minutes, crossing vast woodland and the Luangwa River's meandering course. On arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your first camp on the banks of the Luangwa River. Settle into your luxury chalet with views of the river, where hippos wallow and elephants come to drink. After lunch, enjoy your first afternoon game drive, easing into the Luangwa rhythm as the late-day light illuminates herds of puku, impala, and Thornicroft's giraffe — a subspecies found nowhere else on earth.
Day 2
South Luangwa — Leopard Tracking & Night Drive
South Luangwa hosts the highest concentration of leopards in Africa, and today's drives are optimised for these elusive cats. The dawn game drive follows fresh tracks along the riverine thickets where leopards hunt. Your guide's intimate knowledge of individual leopards and their territories maximises your chances of exceptional sightings. After brunch, relax at camp watching the river life — elephant crossings, hippo disputes, and carmine bee-eaters nesting in the riverbank. The afternoon drive extends into the night with a spotlight, revealing South Luangwa's remarkable nocturnal world: leopard on the hunt, genet cats, porcupines, and the bizarre-looking aardvark.
Day 3
Transfer to Remote Camp — Deep Bush
After a morning game drive along the river, transfer by 4x4 deeper into the park to your second camp, located in a remote area far from the main gate. The journey itself is a game drive, passing through prime lion and wild dog territory. Arrive at your bush camp — a more intimate setting with just a handful of chalets overlooking a productive lagoon. Elephants, buffalo, and hippos frequent the waterhole, and the birdlife is outstanding. The afternoon game drive explores this less-visited section where large predator sightings are frequent and other vehicles are rare.
Day 4
Walking Safari — On Foot in the Wild
Today you experience the activity that South Luangwa pioneered and that remains the pinnacle of the African safari experience: the walking safari. Led by an armed guide and expert tracker, walk through the bush in single file, learning to read the landscape as predators do. The heightened awareness of walking — the crack of a twig, the distant rumble of an elephant, the scent of wild sage crushed underfoot — transforms your relationship with the bush. Encounter elephants, buffalo, and giraffe on foot, maintaining safe distances while experiencing a level of intimacy impossible from a vehicle. The afternoon game drive focuses on lion prides and the dynamics of predator territories in this section of the park.
Day 5
Full Day Game Drives — Wild Dog & Carmine Bee-Eaters
The final full day in South Luangwa. The morning game drive targets the endangered African wild dog — South Luangwa supports one of the most studied populations in Africa, and sightings of packs on the hunt are among the most exhilarating moments in safari. Visit the carmine bee-eater colony on the Luangwa riverbank (seasonal, August-November), where thousands of these brilliantly coloured birds nest in the soft sand. After a bush lunch, the afternoon game drive covers new ground, targeting any remaining wish-list species. The farewell dinner is a celebration of the Luangwa, served by the riverside with candles, linen, and the sounds of the African night.
Day 6
South Luangwa to Lusaka — Departure
A final early morning walking safari offers a last chance to connect with the bush on foot. Return to camp for breakfast, then transfer to Mfuwe Airport for your flight back to Lusaka. The flight provides aerial views of the Luangwa Valley's oxbow lagoons and meandering river channels. Arrive in Lusaka with time for lunch and connecting flights. Depart Zambia with memories of leopard encounters, the thrill of walking safaris, and the warm hospitality that makes South Luangwa one of Africa's most beloved parks.
